DJI Phantom 4 Pro and Pro +, the test

This multi-rotor is the flagship of the Phantom range in early 2017. Why this precision? Because the renewal of the range is fast, very fast (see here). The machine I tested is the Phantom 4 Pro +. It is a Phantom 4 Pro whose radio control has been enhanced with an integrated screen. Not embedded in the fairing as for the radio controls of the Typhoon H of Yuneec, Hubsan machines, but fixed on a non removable support and equipped with a hinge. Is that the only difference? Yes. Please note that the Phantom 4 Pro + has been loaned to us by Studiosport. As usual, tell us if you think that practice has influenced our judgment. This test is a bit long. I plead guilty. In my defense, I am convinced that it is important to know as much as possible about such a product before heating up the credit card. If you do not want to read everything, skip to the conclusion on this page.

P4, P4P, P4P +?

The look of the Phantom 4 Pro is unchanged from that of the Phantom 4. And even the entire Phantom range for who is unfamiliar with these devices. We do not change a design that has sold like hotcakes. How to recognize the Phantom 4 Pro of the Phantom 4? It is equipped with two cameras at the front on the top of the landing gear, but also two at the rear. Plus two sensors to the right and left of the hull. How to differentiate the Phantom 4 Pro from the Phantom 4 Pro +? Only the radio remote control and its screen, or the absence of a screen, make it possible to decide. This test was done with the Phantom 4 Pro +, the one with integrated screen in the radio, but the descriptions and the arguments advanced are the same as for the Phantom 4 Pro.

Tour of the owner

The machine measures 35 cm diagonal from motor to motor. What is the actual footprint? 28.5 cm side and 15 cm high, measured without the propellers. The weight ? 878 grams without battery or propellers. It is necessary to add 462 grams for the battery 5870 mAh, and 46 grams for the 4 propellers. Or a weight in order of flight of 1.386 kilo. The propellers are 24 cm (9.45 ") self-locking or self-locking models. To put them in place, simply place them on the motor shaft and push down, then make a small movement in the opposite direction of rotation to lock them.

Easy !

Handling does not take more than half a second! It does not require any tools, either to install the propeller or to remove it. Impossible to make sense wrong when you install them: not only a black or white color code indicates which propeller to place, but a polarizer avoids making a mistake. The system was further simplified compared to the Phantom 4, while maintaining the compatibility of the propellers (model DJI 9450S). DJI does not communicate on the characteristics of its engines. We will see in the test, there is nothing to complain about and want to replace them. Do not look for the ESCs that regulate the motors, they are hidden inside the immaculate white hull, made of composite materials.

Battery

This is a proprietary model, a Lipo 4S 15.2V of 5870 mAh. It is guaranteed for operation between -10 ° and 40 °. The data often seems futile, but the temperature has dropped to -5 ° during our tests! Press the button to display the status of the load with 4 diodes. To turn on the Phantom 4 Pro +, press this button briefly, followed by a long press. A good way to prevent the unit from turning on by itself. To recharge it, DJI delivers a mains charger. It also allows you to charge the radio battery simultaneously. Note that the charging plug of the battery is not keyed: it plugs indifferently in one direction or the other.

The sensors

Inside the Phantom 4 Pro there is a GPS receiver and its antenna, as well as a Glonass receiver that receives signals from Russian satellites. The combination of the two makes it possible to obtain a correct position very quickly, generally in less than one minute. It also allows a more precise positioning. The device also has an electronic compass, duplicated to ensure data redundancy. The IMU, that is to say the conventional sensors of gyroscope type, accelerometer, is also doubled. It's used for ? To deal with interference by comparing the data of the two sensors to check that they are correct. An altimetric barometer completes the classical endowment.

Additionally, if you happen need to purchase some rc helis, you can search via Banggood website, which is one of the wholesale platform to provide affordable prices, such as pc21, typhoon rc, edge 540 v3, etc.
